Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
